The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has instructed its Resident Electoral Commissioners to put a hold on preparation and publicity for the upcoming voter revalidation exercise. This directive, which was issued through a letter dated April 4, 2026, and signed by INEC Secretary Rose Oriaran-Anthony, directed REC's to scale back on external activities related to the exercise.
However, internal preparations, such as sourcing personnel and preparing INEC Voter Enrolment Devices, are to continue as planned. The Commission's notice states that RECs should await further instructions on the way forward.
This development comes on the heels of INEC's announcement to launch a nationwide voter revalidation drive on April 13, 2026, ahead of the 2027 general election.
In a related update, INEC has also changed the format of its scheduled meeting with RECs from an in-person gathering to a virtual one via Zoom. The meeting, initially set for April 9, 2026, will now be held online, with RECs advised to remain in their respective states and await login details.
The Commission apologizes for any inconvenience caused by this development and assures that further directives will be communicated in due course.
