Imagine spending seven years of your life behind bars for a crime you didn't commit. For Idowu Fashola, this nightmare became a reality. But his story takes an incredible turn, showcasing the power of community, kindness, and justice.
Fashola, 67, was accused of raping a young girl who had lived with his family and was subsequently detained. But after a prolonged court case, he was found not guilty and discharged. Despite being released, his journey to recovery is far from over.
Fashola's story gained traction after Punch Newspaper shared his ordeal on social media, sparking a wave of donations and support. A former colleague saw his story and stepped in to help arrange medical treatment for Fashola's failing eyesight, which worsened in custody.
In a recent video shared by Punch Newspaper Online, Fashola, accompanied by his wife Olukemi, broke down in tears as he thanked those who helped him.
"I thank God for saving me," Fashola said, breaking down in tears alongside his wife Olukemi. "I thank everyone who helped me, and even those who couldn't may God bless you all."
Despite donations covering his medical bills, Fashola still needs help with basic needs like opening a bank account and getting a phone. His family is working on regularizing his National Identification Number (NIN).
