The Federal Government has rolled out new immigration reforms to tighten border security and make Nigeria more attractive to investors.
Interior Minister Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo announced the changes in Abuja during a meeting with Mohammed Bello Shehu, Chairman of the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission.
At the heart of the reform is a fully online visa system. Applicants can now apply, track, and receive approval without paperwork. Each visa will carry a secure QR code to help officials verify travelers at entry points. The government says this will speed up processing, reduce delays, and cut out manual interference.
Alongside the visa system, the ministry has set up a single platform to handle expatriate permits and quotas. The platform links directly with the Nigeria Immigration Service. This allows real-time tracking of foreign workers and removes the need for middlemen. Tunji-Ojo said the process is now more transparent and easier to monitor.
He stressed that Nigeria is still open to investors. However, citizenship rules will continue to follow the constitution strictly.
Shehu welcomed the reforms. He said better migration systems will improve revenue tracking, security, and government earnings.
Experts say the move comes at a key time. Nigeria is trying to secure its borders while also drawing in foreign business and skilled workers.
