Lassa Fever Outbreak: Lagos Sounds Alarm as Death Toll Rises Nationwide

  T he Lagos State Government has launched an urgent awareness and prevention campaign to combat the rising cases of Lassa fever across Nigeria. The outbreak has claimed 167 lives and infected over 660 people between January and mid-March 2026, making it one of the most severe outbreaks in recent years. Lassa fever, a highly contagious viral disease transmitted from rodents to humans and between people, has spread to 22 states and 93 local government areas. The Commissioner for Health, Prof. Akin Abayomi, warns that the situation is a "serious national health concern" and calls for coordinated action to contain the outbreak. Nigeria Sanctions 48 Individuals, Groups for Terror Financing Activities

T he Nigerian government has released a list of 48 individuals and groups involved in financing terrorist activities in the country. This list was published by the Nigeria Sanctions Committee (NIGSAC) just a day after the Attorney General's office concluded the ninth phase of mass trials for over 500 people linked to Boko Haram, securing 386 convictions. The list includes three groups already banned as terrorist organizations: Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Ansaru, and Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP). Notable individuals on the list include Simon Ekpa, self-styled Prime Minister of Biafra, who was convicted in Finland for terrorism-related charges, and Tukur Mamu, an alleged negotiator for the Abuja-Kaduna train kidnapping, who is facing terrorism charges.
