The Kwara State Government has taken custody of a newborn baby allegedly abandoned by its mother, a student, after giving birth at a private hospital in the state. The government has reiterated its commitment to protecting vulnerable children and orphans.
According to the state Commissioner for Women Affairs, Opeyemi Oluwakemi, the baby was delivered on Thursday and brought to the ministry on Friday by a police officer, Medinat Garuba, and the hospital's Chief Medical Director, Dr. Giwa Luqman.
The Commissioner stated that the government will provide necessary medical and physical care for the baby, emphasizing that every child in the state is important.
The Chief Medical Director of Apalara Hospital, Luqman, revealed that the mother had initially sought to terminate the pregnancy but was counselled to carry it to term. However, she abandoned the baby after delivery.
Oluwakemi further noted that the Child Rights Law allows for the reintegration of abandoned babies into society through fostering or adoption, but due process must be followed, and sufficient time should be given for mothers to reconsider their decisions.
