Police in Anambra State have arrested a man for posing as a JAMB official and holding exam materials that did not belong to him.
The suspect, Eric Nwombu, was picked up by officers from the Inspector General of Police Safe School Initiative at a cyber cafe in Atani, Ogbaru Local Government Area.
Police said they recovered eight 2026 JAMB examination slips from him, along with an exercise book that listed students’ names and exam numbers. He could not explain why he had the items.
The arrest came after staff at the cyber cafe raised the alarm. They became suspicious when Nwombu started collecting 2026 JAMB exam slips from students who visited the cafe to check their exam centers.
When questioned, Nwombu told the staff he was a “JAMB 2026 coordinator” in Atani. The workers were not convinced by his answer and quickly contacted the police.
As officers moved in, the suspect tried to run but was caught on the spot.
Confirming the arrest, Police Public Relations Officer SP Tochukwu Ikenga said officers have begun an early investigation. He added that the case will be handed over to the State Criminal Investigation Department in Awka for a full and detailed probe.
Commissioner of Police CP Ikioye Orutugu said the Command is focused on protecting the credibility of public exams. He asked residents to stay alert and report any suspicious behaviour to the police without delay.
