According to NiDCOM, information from the Nigerian consulate in Johannesburg indicates that fresh protests are scheduled to take place in Gauteng province from April 27 to April 29, 2026. Protesters are reportedly seeking to pressure South African authorities over the continued presence of foreigners in the country.
In its advisory, the commission cautioned Nigerians to steer clear of protest gatherings, avoid congested public spaces, and follow local news outlets for timely updates on developments and security conditions.
NiDCOM further urged Nigerian business owners to shut down operations on April 27, which is observed as Freedom Day in South Africa. It also recommended that shops remain closed on April 28 and 29, warning that foreign-owned establishments are frequently targeted during periods of civil unrest.
The commission expressed support for the stance taken by Ninikanwa O. Okey-Uche, Nigeria’s Consul-General in Johannesburg. It confirmed that the mission remains open and is coordinating with South African police to protect Nigerian citizens and their interests.
Additionally, NiDCOM disclosed that Bianca Onoh, Nigeria’s Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, is in talks with her South African counterpart to address the unfolding situation and ensure the safety of Nigerians in the country.
This advisory comes following the heightened concerns over xenophobic tensions in some parts of South Africa.
