Nigeria’s football family is in mourning again after the death of former Nigeria Football Association (NFA) president, Alhaji Ibrahim Galadima. He died on Saturday in Kano at the age of 74.
The news was first shared by Sani Toro, a former General Secretary of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF). In his message, Mr Toro paid tribute to the late football chief.
“I regret to announce the death of our respected Alh Ibrahim Galadima, former NFA Chairman, today in Kano. May Allah reward him with Aljanna Firdausi,” he wrote.
The NFF also released an official statement to confirm the sad news. The football body described Mr Galadima as one of Nigeria’s most respected sports administrators. It added that he made great contributions to football development for many years.
Who Was Ibrahim Galadima?
Alhaji Ibrahim Galadima led the NFA, now called the NFF, from 2002 to 2006. Before that, he served as Commissioner for Works supervising sports in Kano State. In that role, he helped set up Kano Pillars Football Club in 1990 and pushed for the building of the Sani Abacha Stadium and Indoor Sports Hall in Kano.
Under his leadership of Nigerian football, the country recorded big wins. Enyimba FC lifted the CAF Champions League in 2003 and 2004, and also won the CAF Super Cup both years. The Super Falcons won the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in 2002 and 2004. Nigeria’s U-20 team also reached the final of the FIFA U-20 World Cup in 2005.
Even after leaving office, he stayed close to the game. He served on NFF peace and reform committees, worked as a match commissioner for Super Eagles games, and in 2022 he was named interim chairman of Kano Pillars FC.
Funeral arrangements have not been announced yet.
