The Imo International Film Festival (IMIFF) is set to make a significant impact on the global film scene with its 2026 edition, themed "Local 2 Global." Scheduled to take place from November 27 to 29, 2026, in Owerri, Imo State, Nigeria, the festival is sponsored by Julob Entertainment, with professional roots connected to the British Council’s Film Lab Africa and local creative partners like Clifford and Stanford Igbo.
In a brief chat, Izuchukwu Okafor, Founder of IMOIFF, stated that the festival aims to bridge the gap between local filmmakers and international distribution platforms like Netflix, Prime Video, and Apple TV. The festival will feature a diverse range of award categories, including Best Feature Film, Best Short Film (Narrative/International), Best Documentary, Best Student Film, Best Animation, and Best Experimental Film, among others. Technical awards for Best Screenplay, Best Actor, and Best Actress will also be high-profile honors.
Films produced within the last two years are eligible, with evaluation criteria focusing on storytelling depth, technical mastery (cinematography and sound), and resonance with local and global audiences.
Speaking further, Okafor revealed that they are not just celebrating film; they are creating an incubation space for African narratives. This year's edition will feature a range of activities, including workshops, masterclasses, a red carpet, networking cocktails, and cultural performances celebrating the heritage of the region.
The preceding filmmaker training programs are slated to run between June and August 2026, providing aspiring filmmakers with valuable skills and insights. The festival is open to independent filmmakers worldwide, with a specialized mission to empower young creatives and women specifically from South East Nigeria.
Aspiring attendees and filmmakers can register and find ticket information at www.imoiff.ng. Filmakers can submit projects through global platforms like FilmFreeway or Festhome.
The 2026 edition marks a significant milestone for IMOIFF, which held its maiden edition in November 2023. With its rich history and commitment to promoting African storytelling, IMOIFF is poised to make a significant impact on the global film scene.
