Benue State Governor Hyacinth Alia has announced the safe rescue of 15 passengers who were kidnapped in the state.
Alia spoke on Sunday at Government House, Makurdi, during a joint press briefing with Commissioner of Police Ifeanyi Emenari. He said the victims were abducted on Wednesday, April 15, along the Taraku–Otukpo road and all regained freedom without injuries.
The governor stated that 17 persons were originally seized, but two broke free on their own. The remaining 15 were later rescued by security operatives.
Eight of those rescued were registered to take the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination conducted by JAMB.
Alia appealed to JAMB to organise a special exam session for the eight candidates. He assured that the Benue State Government would fully back the process. He further instructed that all victims should receive free medical attention and asked the Ministry of Education to assist them in keeping up with their studies.
“Benue remains peaceful, and criminal elements will not be tolerated,” the governor said, while applauding security agencies for their efforts.
Commissioner Emenari disclosed that eight persons have been arrested in relation to the abduction. He said credible evidence ties seven of the suspects to this incident and other kidnappings in the region.
According to the police chief, a joint security effort led to the rescue. He appreciated the support of the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, and the Benue State Government.
