The Lagos State Ministry of Housing has reminded people living in state owned estates that they must get permission before they change the outside of their buildings or install solar panels.
Permanent Secretary Abdulhafis Toriola gave the reminder in a statement released on Wednesday, April 22nd, through the ministry’s Director of Public Affairs, Ganiu Lawal.
Toriola said the rule is not new. It is written in the Letter of Allocation and Allottees Guide that every homeowner receives when they buy a flat.
He explained that the approval is needed to protect shared parts of the buildings, like rooftops, walls, and water systems. It also helps stop dangers such as fire from badly installed solar panels.
The ministry brought in clear guidelines after facing more problems with solar panel installations on government estates.
“In recent times, the ministry had to repair leaking rooftops and deal with fire incidents caused by residents who installed solar panels the wrong way,” Toriola said.
He noted that Lagos housing estates are built as social housing. Many families often share one block, so they also share roofs and other facilities.
Because of this, the guidelines will control how solar panels are installed. They cover the quality of materials, how panels are set up, and the skill of the installer. The goal is to reduce risk to the whole building.
Toriola added that the rules will also make sure roof space is shared fairly among residents. They will provide insurance cover if damage happens.
He said the ministry welcomes comments from residents and will keep holding public awareness sessions in the estates.
He urged all homeowners to follow the steps and contact the ministry if they need more information. This will keep buildings safe, strong, and peaceful for everyone living there.
