The Federal Government has called South Africa’s acting High Commissioner to a meeting in Abuja. This comes after protests against foreigners in South Africa and reports that Nigerians and their businesses have been attacked.
As of press time, the diplomat’s name had not been confirmed.
Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson Kimiebi Ebienfa said the meeting will take place on Monday, May 4, 2026, at the ministry’s office in Abuja.
Ebienfa explained that Nigeria wants to formally tell South Africa it is deeply worried. The government fears the recent events could damage the good relationship between both countries.
“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has invited the Acting High Commissioner of South Africa to a meeting on Monday,” the statement said. “The goal is to express Nigeria’s serious concern about incidents that could hurt our friendly ties.”
During the meeting, officials will talk about two main issues. First, the ongoing protests by different groups in South Africa. Second, the cases of Nigerians who have been mistreated and the attacks on Nigerian-owned shops.
Many Nigerians at home are angry about what is happening in South Africa. The government said it understands the public’s frustration but asked everyone to stay calm.
“We know Nigerians are unhappy with how their brothers and sisters are being treated in South Africa,” the ministry said. “But we ask the public to remain calm. The Federal Government will continue to protect the rights and safety of Nigerians living there.”
In recent weeks, protests against foreigners have grown in South African cities like Pretoria. Reports say migrants have been harassed, threatened, and beaten. In some cases, protesters went to schools and tried to stop children of foreigners from attending classes.
The violence has already turned deadly. At least two Nigerians have been killed. This has raised fear among Nigerians in South Africa and led to fresh calls for the Nigerian government to act.
