The two recent incidents involving Nigerian passengers on commercial flights have generated a lot of debate online and offline. The first incident occurred on Tuesday, August 5th, involving Popular Nigerian Fuji musician Wasiu Ayinde Adewale (K1 De Ultimate) and some Value Jet staff members, including Captain Oluranti Ogoyi, at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja. The second incident took place on Sunday, August 10th, between a passenger, Ms. Comfort Emmanson, and Ibom Air flight staffs on a flight from Uyo to Lagos.
Judging some incident based on videos that emerged online might not be the best approach. Most times, the media is used to project a specific narrative, showcasing only what an individual or group wants the public to see. So, it is very important that we don't base our judgement on videos that emerged online. I commend the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) for demanding firsthand reports from passengers on the plane to ensure a fair hearing and balanced judgment. Sometimes, the person who appears unruly or loud might not be the actual troublemaker, but peaceful individual might be the one who provoked the situation. Without taking sides or debating who is right or wrong, Let us consider the complexities of the incident and focus on the lessons to be grabbed.
√ Effective communication is key: Communication is very important in our daily activities and can trigger chaos if not properly used. The most sensitive means of communication, which is nonverbal (gestures to be specific), might be misunderstood by the other party involved in an incident. Even the tone used might be perceived as commanding or disrespectful, even if the source didn't mean so. Effective communication is key to avoiding problems, and it's usual, as many of us have been victims of this.
√ Abiding by Rules or Precautionary Measure: The reports from the incidents seem similar, as it was reported that the popular singer refused to drop the flask, which was suspected to contain alcoholic content, and Ms. Comfort Emmanson, according to Ibom Air, refused to turn off her phone, though the report by another passenger on the same flight was different from the initial claim by the airline. The whole issue wouldn't have escalated if the passengers had complied with the rules given. It is essential that we abide by rules, regardless of our social status; rules can be bent only for crucial reasons.
√ Professionalism: The recording of the video and the manner in which the lady was dragged out didn't seem professional to me. The recording itself might serve as evidence while narrating the incident, but posting the sensitive part of the video was dehumanizing, and the airline needs to sanction the person behind the camera. Airlines should train their staff on how to handle passengers with dignity and respect, regardless of the situation, because people are interested in customer feedback about services or businesses. A negative feedback can ruin a business.
√ Preparedness: I know some might not agree with this, though the lady's dressing is never my concern or should be the reason for carrying out such a dehumanizing act. Every occasion or place has fitting attire, and it is okay to wear what makes you comfortable. However, in chaotic situations, it is very crucial to consider the consequences that might emerge from any altercations. I have heard people say they avoided fight, because they are not properly dressed to avoid exposure. This is not about blaming the lady but sharing a lesson. There was part of the video online showing Ms. Comfort Emmanson slapping the air hostess, but we know online videos often lack full context. However, we should know that Physical assault can trigger retaliation , it might be immediate or delayed. Though she claimed that the air hostess triggered her towards slapping her.
In conclusion, this incident should serve as a lesson, educating the public about the repercussions of disobeying rules in specific settings.By learning from this experience, we can make the environments safe for everyone.
