Nigeria Launches National Cybersecurity Coordination Council to Safeguard Digital Economy

In a bid to strengthen the nation's cybersecurity defenses, the Federal Government has announced the establishment of a National Cybersecurity Coordination Council. The initiative, led by Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, Dr. 'Bosun Tijani, aims to create a unified platform for government agencies, private sector organizations, and civil society to share information and respond to cyber threats.

Recent cyberattacks on major institutions have exposed the need for a coordinated defense strategy, and the council is expected to address this vulnerability. The proposed council will bring together experts from various sectors, including Chief Information Security Officers (CISOs), law enforcement agencies, and international tech providers.

"Cbersecurity is a shared national responsibility," Dr. Tijani emphasized. "Protecting Nigeria's digital economy requires strong partnerships and collective vigilance across government, industry, and civil society."

The council's objectives include developing early-warning systems, training a skilled cybersecurity workforce, and aligning national resilience protocols with global standards. A technical coordination secretariat will be established within the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) to facilitate the process.

The Ministry has scheduled a National Cybersecurity Industry Roundtable for April 2026 to launch stakeholder consultations and co-create the council's operational framework. This partnership-led approach is expected to enhance Nigeria's digital ecosystem and safeguard citizens' interests.
