Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi says Nigeria’s biggest need right now is leaders with real business experience, arguing that practical wealth creation matters more than academic degrees alone.
Obi made the comment during an interview on "60 Minutes with Mr. Kay" on News Central TV, hosted by broadcast journalist Kayode Akintemi.
The discussion came up after former Kano State governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso had said he was more qualified for leadership because of his PhD. Obi responded by saying qualification depends on perspective.
“Qualification is a perspective; it depends on where you’re coming from,” Obi said. “Rabiu Kwankwaso said he’s more qualified because he has a PhD. I don’t have a PhD. Today, in the country, I would say he has some experience. He’s been exposed; there’s no doubt about that.”
While acknowledging Kwankwaso’s academic and political background, Obi argued that Nigeria’s current economic challenges call for a different kind of leadership.
“I don’t think his claim was wrong, but for what Nigeria needs today, Nigeria needs a wealth creator; it needs a wealth manager,” he said.
Obi pointed to his own record in business as proof. He said he built companies from the ground up into reputable firms both in Nigeria and abroad, and that this gives him an edge in tackling the country’s economic problems.
“In this context, nobody today, including the president, can claim to have passed through my experience,” he added.
The interview adds to ongoing public discussion about governance and the type of leadership many believe Nigeria needs to move forward economically.
The remarks have already drawn reactions online, with Nigerians debating whether academic qualifications, private sector experience, or political exposure should carry more weight in choosing the country’s leaders.
