President Bola Tinubu has approved the appointment of Prof Segun Aina as the next Registrar and Chief Executive of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, JAMB.
The announcement came on Thursday through a statement from Bayo Onanuga, the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy. Aina will officially take over when Prof Ishaq Oloyede’s tenure ends on July 31, 2026.
At 39, Aina is set to become the youngest person to head the board in its history. He will turn 40 in July.
From Lecture Halls to National Exams
Aina is a Professor of Computer Engineering at Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife. For the past 15 years, his work has focused on helping public institutions shift to stronger digital systems, with a special focus on education and examinations.
He has already worked behind the scenes with bodies like NECO and NABTEB, advising them on how to improve their ICT infrastructure and reduce exam malpractice through better technology.
Officials say his background makes him well-suited for JAMB’s current push toward more transparent and tech-driven operations.
Education and Experience
Aina’s academic path is rooted in engineering and digital systems. He studied Computer Systems Engineering at the University of Kent, then completed a Master’s in Internet Computing and Network Security and a PhD in Digital Signal Processing at Loughborough University in the UK.
He also trained in public sector management through the Senior Management Programme at Lagos Business School.
The Presidency described him as a “distinguished academic and systems expert,” noting that his skills match JAMB’s direction as it modernizes its processes.
Beyond academics, Aina is a registered member of COREN, the Nigerian Society of Engineers, IEEE, and the Institution of Engineering and Technology.
His expertise in digital infrastructure, network security, and institutional reform puts him in a strong position to address some of JAMB’s biggest challenges: exam integrity, system reliability, and secure data management.
Tinubu said he expects Aina to build on the gains made under Oloyede and bring fresh insight to the board’s operations.
With JAMB handling millions of candidates every year, the pressure to deliver smooth, credible exams is high. Aina’s appointment signals that the government wants someone who understands both the technical and administrative sides of that task.
The handover will happen before the end of July, when Oloyede’s term officially ends.
