Anambra university vows zero tolerance as Governing Council takes disciplinary action.
Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University has dismissed five staff members after finding them guilty of sexual harassment, abuse, threats, extortion and other misconduct.
The university’s spokesperson, Harrison Madubueze, announced the dismissals on Sunday in Awka. He said the Governing Council approved the action during its 122nd meeting on 12 June.
Those affected include two professors. C.C. Nwabachili, who recently served as dean of the Faculty of Law, and Chike Osegbue from the Department of Political Science, Faculty of Social Sciences.
Two lecturers from the Microbiology Department at the Uli Campus were also sacked. They are I.H. Iheukwumere and Emeka Nwabunnia, both under the Faculty of Natural Sciences.
The fifth person is Ifeoma Kakulu. She was a principal assistant registrar and served as examination officer for the Faculty of Law when the alleged incidents occurred.
Mr Madubueze said investigations confirmed the staff committed offences ranging from sexual harassment to intimidation, extortion and other breaches of ethics.
At the meeting, the council restated its stand on discipline and accountability. It warned that anyone who damages the institution’s reputation will face strict sanctions.
“We are building a university that is safe, transparent and ready for the future,” the statement read. “This reflects the vision of a ‘now university and of the future’ we remain committed to.”
The spokesperson added that the decision shows the university’s resolve to protect students and staff, uphold high standards and keep public trust in its academic and administrative processes.
