According to a recent report by The Guardian Newspaper, the Federal Capital Territory Police have begun a clampdown on cars with dark windows and hidden license plates in Abuja.
Commissioner Ahmed Muhammed said the order from Inspector General Tunde Disu followed findings that criminals often use such vehicles to hide their identity. More than 30 cars have been seized so far, and drivers who violate the rule will face prosecution.
At a press briefing on Friday at the command headquarters, Muhammed asked for public cooperation and highlighted key successes in recent operations.
On May 25, 2026, officers raided a hideout in Runji Village, Zuba, and arrested three men who appeared in viral videos wearing military uniforms and holding AK-47 rifles. The suspects are Umar Babangida, 25, Adamu Yeti, 22, and Yahaya Idris, 24, all from Rijana in Kaduna State. They told police the weapons came from a gang leader known only as “Esco,” who remains at large. Items recovered include an AK-47 loaded with 30 rounds, eight phones, two jackknives, power banks, and more videos of the group with firearms.
In another case, police arrested Emmanuel Acha Leku, 32, from Douala, Cameroon, and his partner, Kazan Vincent, in Benue State. The pair were linked to the kidnap and murder of 22-year-old Emmanuel Chukwuemeka. Leku admitted to killing Chukwuemeka in Lokogoma after a dispute over proceeds from a fraud they committed together. He then used the victim’s phone to demand a ₦5 million ransom from the family. Chukwuemeka’s body was later found and taken to Sahad Hospital in Apo for an autopsy.
The command also intercepted Yau Sule, a wanted arms supplier, on June 2, 2026, along the Abuja-Kaduna road. He was found with 81 rounds of 7.62mm AK-47 ammunition and 100 rounds of belted machine gun bullets. Wanted since 2023, Sule led officers to his sister, Maria Sule, who is married to fugitive bandit Buhari Shuaibu. She was arrested for helping to move ammunition to her brother.
Two other suspects, Muhammed Muhammed, 22, and Muhammed Saidu, 20, were arrested for alleged ‘one-chance’ robbery. They were found in a blue Volkswagen Golf with plate number SKK 567 AG.
Muhammed said the arrests show the commitment of his officers and the importance of public tips. He added that efforts are ongoing to track down other gang members still at large.
