Two Deaths Rock Cross River as Police Probe Stabbing in Ikom and Body Found in Calabar Church

Grief has hit two communities in Cross River State after police confirmed separate deaths in Ikom and Calabar within days of each other. The State Police Command said it is investigating both cases. ASP Sunday Eitokpah, the Command’s spokesperson, confirmed the incidents on Monday and Sunday.

In Ikom, an argument ended in tragedy. A 36-year-old man, Charles Ekuma Eze of Etayip Community, lost his life on Friday.

Eitokpah said the Ikom Division got the report at 10:37pm on July 4, 2026 from Ndifon Ndifon of Aya Street and Felix Agbor of Mankono Village. Ndifon chairs the local Task Force, while Agbor is Youth Leader of Asse-Asin Community.

According to police, at about 5:46pm that day, Michael Ndifon, 42, allegedly stabbed Eze in the ribs with a dagger during a heated quarrel.

People around rushed Eze to Holy Family Hospital in Ikom. Because his injuries were severe, doctors referred him to Alex Ekwueme Federal University Teaching Hospital in Abakaliki, where he later died.

Police have arrested Michael Ndifon and recovered the dagger. Eze’s body is now in the morgue for autopsy. The case will be moved to the State Criminal Investigation Department for further probe.

“We have the suspect and the weapon. The file is going to SCID for a detailed investigation,” Eitokpah said. He called on residents to remain calm.

Meanwhile in Calabar, there was a very sad discovery in Ikot Ansa. Calabar Municipality, police are investigating how Blessing Ayebe died inside a church toilet.

Her body was found around 9pm on Sunday, June 29. Family members had raised the alarm after she didn’t come home from church.

On July 1, her daughter Peace Ayebe reported the case at Federal Housing Police Station. Peace said her brother Saviour Ayebe told her their mother was missing.

Eitokpah said Ayebe was last seen at church service on Saturday, June 28.

“The body is in the mortuary for autopsy to determine the cause of death. No one has been arrested yet because we have not seen any sign of foul play,” he stated.

The Command said detectives are working on both cases and will share updates as the investigation progresses.
