Peter Obi has pushed back hard against a story making the rounds online that he told Nigerian soldiers to turn down any salary increase until after the 2027 elections.
The Labour Party leader said the claim was false, and that it twisted everything he stands for when it comes to the men and women in uniform.
“I wish to address a recent report that falsely attributes a statement to me, suggesting that Nigerian soldiers should refuse any salary increments until after the elections,” Obi said on Tuesday. “This assertion is entirely untrue.”
For Obi, the issue has never been about pay. It’s about protection.
He said his respect for the military, especially those on the frontlines, has not changed.
“My profound respect for our security forces, particularly the Nigerian Army personnel who diligently serve and protect our nation under challenging conditions, is unwavering,” he stated. “I have consistently advocated for the adequate provision of equipment, motivation, and protection for our security personnel.”
The former Anambra governor explained where the confusion may have come from. He recalled speaking out in the past after soldiers were killed because help arrived too late.
“My concern was palpable when soldiers were lost to insurgents due to a delayed rescue effort,” he said. “That made me ask: how can we ask people to defend us, yet leave them vulnerable when they need us most?”
If given the chance to lead, Obi promised to put troops first not just in words, but in resources.
“Should I be elected President, the well-being, resources, safety, and honour of our soldiers will be a paramount priority,” he said. “Those who ensure Nigeria's security must never be relegated to a secondary concern.”
He went further: “Under my leadership, scenarios where our servicemen and women are left unprotected in the face of peril will be eradicated.”
Obi ended by asking Nigerians not to fall for the viral post.
“I implore the Nigerian populace to dismiss this misleading report,” he said. “I remain committed to articulating a clear and consistent vision for a secure and prosperous Nigeria. The realization of a new and secure Nigeria is indeed Possible.” He said.
The clarification comes at a time when conversations around soldiers’ pay, kits, and morale are getting louder, as troops continue to battle insurgency and banditry across several states.
