Getting into an HND programme in Nigeria will now go through JAMB.

The National Board for Technical Education, NBTE, announced on Tuesday that the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board will handle all Higher National Diploma admissions starting this session.

In a circular dated September 9, 2026, signed by NBTE Executive Secretary, Prof. Idris Bugaje, the board said the change affects polytechnics, related institutions, colleges of nursing, and colleges of health technology.

The goal is simple: to create one central admission system and stop "illegal and compromised admissions."

According to NBTE, the decision was made after a meeting with the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, and officials from JAMB, NYSC, NBTE, and the Federal Ministry of Education.

The board explained that the new system will also protect students. In the past, some HND graduates had problems with NYSC mobilisation because of irregular admissions. Centralising the process through JAMB is meant to prevent that.

“All HND admissions in all institutions shall, from this session, be taken over by JAMB to provide a centralised process and avoid illegal and compromised admissions, jeopardising students’ mobilisation for NYSC after HND,” the circular stated.

NBTE added that it will draft new HND Admission Guidelines and send them to JAMB. The guidelines will cover key areas like how long ND holders must wait before applying for HND, and exemptions for some ND health-related courses.

The Federal Ministry of Education is expected to release more details on the arrangement next week.

For thousands of ND graduates hoping to go for HND, this means every application will now pass through JAMB’s digital portal, just like UTME admissions.
