Galatasaray’s celebrations did not last long. The Turkish champions confirmed on Sunday that two of their key players, Victor Osimhen and Mario Lemina, will be out for weeks after suffering groin injuries in the same match. The update was revealed by the club through an official statement.
Both men went down during the 3-2 win over İstanbul Başakşehir, and the club sent them straight to Acıbadem Hospital for MRI scans to know exactly how bad it was.
The results were not what Galatasaray fans wanted to hear. According to the club, doctors found an advanced-moderate strain with bleeding in the same muscle for both players. For Osimhen it was his right adductor. For Lemina, the same area. Treatment has already started.
Osimhen’s pain came early. He had already scored in the 33rd minute before clutching his groin and walking off with help. Lemina did not even come out for the second half. At the time it looked like just another knock. Now we know it is much more serious.
The Nigerian striker is expected to be out for about three weeks. That means he will miss Galatasaray’s Champions League opener against Sporting CP, plus league games against Kocaelispor and Trabzonspor. For Nigeria, it is also a big worry with the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers coming up. Osimhen remains the Super Eagles’ main goal threat.
Lemina faces a similar wait. His injury has been described as a muscle tear and doctors say he needs two to three weeks to recover. Turkish medical sources also warned that painkilling injections will not help here. Playing through it, they said, could only make things worse in the long run.
With two senior players gone, head coach Okan Buruk will have to look elsewhere. All eyes will now turn to new €10 million signing Deniz Gül and winger Barış Alper Yılmaz to step up as Galatasaray begins its Champions League campaign.
The club said it will keep fans updated as both players continue treatment. For now, Galatasaray has a win on the board, but two very important names in the treatment room.
