NIPOST Begins Nationwide Postcode Test to Strengthen Nigeria’s Digital Address Network

Nigeria’s postal agency has started a nationwide test of its new postcode system.

The Guardian Newspaper reported that NIPOST launched the Postcode Model Field Validation Exercise in Abuja on June 21, 2026. The goal is to build a stronger address framework, upgrade mail services, and power Nigeria’s digital economy with reliable location data.

NIPOST’s Postmaster General and CEO, Tola Odeyemi, said the project marks a major step toward a modern and competitive nation. She explained that the updated system will simplify address checks, support business growth, raise service standards, and improve digital infrastructure.

Odeyemi stressed that precise location details are now a must-have. She noted that correct address data powers delivery services, e-commerce, emergency teams, security agencies, banking access, urban planning, census work, and online government services.

“We are not just testing a postcode model here. We are building a core part of Nigeria’s digital and physical address system,” she said at the event. “Knowing exact locations is key to moving the country forward.”

The new digital and alphanumeric postcode is designed to give every address in Nigeria a clear, smart code for the future. This full rollout follows a 2023 pilot under the last Postmaster General, which showed the model could work as a dependable national reference.

Teams will now move across different states, communities, and settlement types to confirm the model’s accuracy and practical use. Odeyemi thanked the Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy for guidance, and acknowledged support from the Nigerian Communications Commission, Office of the Surveyor General, NASRDA, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Meade Networks, and other partners.

She called on field workers and technical staff to act with skill and integrity, saying their effort will touch millions of lives and shape Nigeria’s digital future.

Dr Aminu Yusuf, Chairman of the National Population Commission, was represented by Federal Commissioner Dr Clifford Zira. He described the exercise as a big step for planning and governance, and promised NPC’s backing for better data and location intelligence.

NIPOST says the data from this nationwide test will guide the final launch of a modern postcode system that improves address verification, boosts economic activity, and strengthens public services.
