Abia Govt Bans Commercial Okada in Umuahia, Aba, Ohafia

Commercial motorcycle riders in Abia State have a new rule to follow from Monday, June 22, 2026.

Governor Alex Otti has ordered a full stop to okada operations in the main city areas of Umuahia, Aba, and Ohafia. The state government announced this on Sunday through the Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu.

According to Kanu, the ban covers all commercial motorcycle services within the metropolitan zones of the three cities. It is part of steps the Otti administration is taking to improve security, protect residents, control traffic, and create a better transport system.

“The prohibition of commercial motorcycle operations within the metropolitan areas of Umuahia, Aba and Ohafia takes effect from Monday, June 22, 2026,” the statement said.

With this directive, all okada riders must end their services in those areas before the deadline. Security agencies and other enforcement teams have been told to ensure the order is obeyed without exception.

The government also warned that anyone who breaks the rule will be arrested on the spot. Any motorcycle used for commercial business in the banned zones will be confiscated in line with existing laws.

Governor Otti urged riders, transport groups, community leaders, and the general public to support the move. He said the decision is aimed at making Abia’s cities safer and more organized, not to hurt anyone’s business.

For many residents in Umuahia, Aba, and Ohafia, okadas have been a fast and cheap way to move through traffic. The ban will now change how people travel daily in these busy urban centers.
