A 42-year-old farmer, Ganiu Agbajo, has been taken into custody in Ogun State after he was accused of sexually assaulting a 12-year-old girl in Ipokia Local Government Area. The case has sparked anger in the community and raised fresh worries about the safety of children.

According to The Punch Newspaper, operatives of the Ogun State Community, Social Orientation and Safety Corps, known as So-Safe Corps, arrested the suspect on Monday after residents alerted them.

The girl’s name is being kept secret to protect her. The corps’ Director of Information and Public Relations, Adegunwa Adegbuyi, who spoke in a statement on Thursday for Corps Commander Soji Ganzallo, said the incident came to light when the child got home upset. When her mother asked what was wrong, the girl said a man had raped her.

The mother raised an alarm right away. Residents in the area then reported the matter to So-Safe Corps. Officers moved quickly and traced the suspect to his home in Hassan Compound, Igbokulu, Ita-Egbe, in Ipokia, where he was picked up.

In early questioning, Agbajo allegedly confessed. He also told investigators that the abuse happened on a farm at Ojugo, Ita-Egbe, in the same local government.

After completing initial checks, the corps transferred both the suspect and the victim to the Nigeria Police at Idiroko Divisional Headquarters for further investigation and possible court action.

Adegbuyi confirmed the handover and said police detectives would now handle the matter. Commander Ganzallo praised the community for speaking out fast and urged people across Ogun State to report any criminal activity to security agencies immediately.

The arrest comes as more cases of sexual violence against minors are being reported across Nigeria. Also on Thursday, the Cross River State Police Command said it had arrested one person and was hunting for others over the alleged rape of a 15-year-old girl in Calabar. The command’s spokesperson, ASP Sunday Eitokpah, said the case was reported at Ikpa Omin Police Division on Tuesday, September 8, 2026. The girl told officers that on September 4, she was forced into a house in the 8 Miles area and held for about three days, during which two men allegedly assaulted her.
