A former church pastor who once chased fame on American Idol has been found guilty of murdering his wife inside their Ohio home.
Caleb Flynn, 40, shot his wife, Ashley Flynn, 37, twice in the back of the head while she slept. It happened on February 16 at their house in Tipp City, close to Dayton.
When police arrived, Flynn told them that strangers had broken in and shot her. Investigators, however, did not buy his story.
The case went to trial for eight days. Then the jury took less than three hours to reach a decision. Flynn cried as the verdict was read out. He was found guilty on nine charges, including aggravated murder and tampering with evidence. He now faces life in prison with no chance of parole, and he will be sentenced on October 5.
So how did police link him to the crime? The court heard that officers used body camera video, along with data from Flynn's iPhone and Apple Watch. According to the BBC, dozens of witnesses also took the stand during the trial.
The most important of them was Alleigha Botner, 24. She was once an intern at Flynn's church, and she had a secret affair with him that lasted almost 18 months. The two sent each other around 100,000 text messages, and prosecutors read some of them aloud in court.
One message, from August 2025, was chilling. Flynn wrote that he stayed up until 4 a.m., crying and trying to work out how to kill his wife without going to jail. In another, he wrote that he simply wanted her dead and gone.
Botner told the jury that she now hates Flynn, because she believes he murdered his wife.
There was also a strange moment in the courtroom. Prosecutors played a love song that Flynn is said to have made for Botner using an AI music app. Jurors seemed to react with laughter, and the clip quickly went viral online.
Prosecutor Paul Watkins said the messages showed that Flynn hated his wife and wanted her gone, yet did not want a divorce. Why? Watkins said Flynn feared losing custody of his daughters, his job at the church, and his job at his wife's family business. Ashley Flynn, meanwhile, worked as a schoolteacher and volleyball coach.
Watkins also pointed out that Flynn's own words did not add up. On the morning of the killing, Flynn told police he was in his daughters' bedroom when he heard gunshots. He said he later found his wife dead and saw that the garage side door was open. Yet later, he told investigators he had never gone to the garage.
Flynn's defence lawyer, Patrick Mulligan, argued that there was no direct evidence against his client. He said that cheating on a spouse does not prove murder. On the tampering charge, he asked the jury, "They can't find the gun, therefore they blame it on him?" Flynn usually kept a gun in the centre console of his truck. It has been missing since the day of the murder, when police found that console open. The defence did not call any witnesses.
Another key witness was Joseph Wilhelm, a special agent with the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation. He told the court that, before the killing, Flynn deleted several apps from his phone. These included Instagram and the AI music app he had used for Botner.
Before all this, Flynn had briefly been seen on TV. In 2013, he appeared on Season 12 of American Idol and sang for judges Mariah Carey, Nicki Minaj and Randy Jackson. He won a golden ticket to Hollywood, but he did not make it to the final stage.
