Aviation Minister says 25 passengers and seven crew were aboard; search and rescue under way
A Nigerian military aircraft travelling from Benin to Lagos crashed on Monday near the Naval Base in Igbokoda, in the Ilaje Local Government Area of Ondo State, with early information indicating that 32 people were on board.
The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, said the aircraft carried 25 passengers and seven crew members, though he described those figures as preliminary.
Keyamo disclosed this in a statement on his official X account, saying air traffic controllers alerted him that the aircraft, with tail number NGR 931, vanished from radar at about 9:13 a.m. Controllers made repeated attempts to reach the crew by radio, but none succeeded.
Subsequent reports confirmed that the plane had come down close to the Naval Base in Igbokoda. Rescuers have since located the wreckage and are continuing their operation at the scene.
"I regret to inform the general public" of the aircraft's disappearance, the minister said as he announced the development.
While expressing concern over the incident, Keyamo noted that military aircraft fall outside the control and regulation of his ministry and the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA). He added that he had spoken with the Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke, and pledged the ministry's cooperation and assistance in the search and rescue effort. He promised to provide further information as more details emerge.
Meanwhile, the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) said it has launched an immediate search and rescue operation. It confirmed that the aircraft was an ATR-42 and that the accident occurred on Monday, October 5, 2026.
In a statement, the NAF's Director of Public Relations and Information, Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, said the relevant units had been activated to respond. The aircraft was flying from Benin towards Lagos when it dropped off radar, and its wreckage was later pinpointed near the Naval Base in Igbokoda, after which rescue efforts continued.
Authorities have not disclosed the condition of the passengers and crew, and rescue personnel remain at the crash site. The cause of the crash has not been established.
The Nigerian Air Force and other relevant authorities are expected to issue further updates as the operation continues.
