Billionaire and X owner Elon Musk has triggered another round of online debate after describing Instagram as a platform for girls.
Musk made the remark on Thursday, October 2, in a short reply on X.
It started when a user named Geiger Capital posted that he had deleted his Instagram account. He called the app an "inherently female app" that offers no real value. Musk responded with a four-word comment: "Instagram is for girls."
The reply quickly went viral, drawing thousands of likes, shares and mixed reactions.
This is not the first time Musk has made such a comment about the Meta-owned platform. In May this year, during an online conversation about how people present themselves on social media, Musk made a similar statement. He said he was confused when adult men sent him links to their Instagram pages. That comment was widely criticized by users who described it as dismissive.
Musk, who bought Twitter in 2022 and rebranded it as X, has often used his account to share blunt opinions about rival platforms. He regularly promotes X as the home for open conversation and free speech, while taking swipes at other social apps.
He did not explain further why he described Instagram that way, and he has not responded to the reactions trailing his post.
The comment has once again divided opinion online. While some of his followers agreed with him and said they also find Instagram less serious, others accused him of generalizing and overlooking the wide range of people and businesses that use the platform daily.
Instagram remains one of the world's most used apps, with more than two billion monthly active users, including individuals, creators, small businesses, news outlets and large brands.
As of press time, Musk has not given any further explanation for his comment, and Meta, which owns Instagram, has not responded to his comment.
