T he National Association of Nigerian Students has praised the management of Abraham Adesanya Polytechnic, Ijebu-Igbo in Ogun State for running the federal student loan scheme with honesty and openness. The commendation came on Thursday when top officials of NANS, led by Secretary General Comrade Oladimeji Uthman, visited the polytechnic. L agos State University has condemned the attack on one of its students following a video that spread widely on social media. The university said in a statement on Friday that the incident involved students of the Lagos State University College of Medicine, LASUCOM, Ikeja. But it stressed that the fight did not happen inside the school. It occurred at a private hostel outside the campus. According to LASU, the student who was assaulted reported the matter to the police immediately. The police are now handling the case. The university also said it has started its own disciplinary process based on school rules. For more than 400 years, classrooms, offices and phone screens around the world have used the Mercator map. It was made in 1569 to help ships sail, but it has one big flaw. When you try to put a round world on flat paper, countries near the middle look smaller. Because of that, Africa has looked almost the same size as Greenland for generations. The truth is very different. Africa is about 14 times bigger than Greenland. Africa covers roughly 30.4 million square kilometres, while Greenland is about 2.2 million. The Federal Government has announced that the First Niger Bridge in Onitsha will be closed to all vehicles for two weeks to allow urgent repair work. In a statement released on Friday and signed by the Acting Federal Controller of Works in Anambra, Timothy Emenike, the Federal Ministry of Works said the closure will start on Monday, September 7, 2026 and end on Monday, September 21, 2026. According to the ministry, engineers who inspected the bridge found that the road surface has worn out and some parts have been damaged by vandals. S hock has gripped the Akinode/Ibogun community in Ogun State following the deaths of a Celestial Church evangelist, Abidemi Odukoya, and his wife, Adenike, who died separately within a week after a reported fight at their home. Speaking on Monday at the launch of the Lagos Domestic and Sexual Violence Awareness Month, the Director of Public Prosecutions, Dr. Babajide Martins, warned that any man who forces his wife into sex without her consent risks life imprisonment under state law. The event was organized by the Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency, DSVA. Martins explained that while Nigerian law does not classify forced sex within marriage as rape, Lagos State takes a different stance.  Under the Lagos Criminal Law, the offence is called “sexual assault by penetration.” He said if a husband ignores his wife’s refusal during a disagreement and goes ahead to force her, he can be arrested and prosecuted. T he Economic and Financial Crimes Commission is holding up a mirror to itself. Three years into his tenure, EFCC Chairman Ola Olukoyede on Monday announced that the agency has dismissed more than 40 of its own officers for corruption and financial malpractice. He also confirmed that at least five others are currently facing prosecution in court. Olukoyede made the disclosure in Abuja during a media briefing to mark his stewardship at the commission’s headquarters.
