32-Year-Old Banker Killed in Unprovoked Times Square Knife Attack

It was a regular Monday afternoon in Times Square. Tourists were taking photos. Workers were heading home. Then, in a matter of minutes, the sound of traffic was cut through by sirens.

By 4:30 p.m., Midtown Manhattan was in chaos. Police and EMTs rushed to West 42nd Street and 7th Avenue after a sudden knife attack left one person dead and another injured.

The person killed was Erin Piacenti, 32, a vice president at Bank of America. She worked in the bank’s business selection and conflicts team at One Bryant Park, just a few blocks from the scene.

What happened?

According to Reuters, the attack started around 4:24 p.m. when a woman pulled out two large knives and began stabbing people near the busy intersection. The New York Police Department confirmed the details.

NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch said investigators believe the attack was random, with no warning and no known link between those involved.

When officers arrived, they found Pamela Cisneros, 49, still holding the knives and moving toward them. Police shot her at the scene. She was later pronounced dead. Authorities said Cisneros had a documented history of mental health issues.

During the same incident, a 68-year-old man was also stabbed. Police said he was taken to hospital and is now in stable condition. His name has not been released.

Bank of America confirmed Piacenti’s death on Tuesday. In a statement, the bank called her “a valued teammate who will be greatly missed” and said “our hearts go out to her family and all of her loved ones.”

Matthew Koder, head of Global Corporate and Investment Banking, told staff she was a “cherished teammate and friend” who joined the bank 18 months ago. The bank said its security teams are working with police and reviewing safety at its offices.

The attack happened in broad daylight in one of New York’s busiest areas, and it has renewed concerns about public safety. That worry comes even as NYPD data shows violent crime, including shootings and murders, hit record lows earlier this summer. Police say the investigation is still ongoing.
