The Lagos State Police Command has launched an investigation into the death of 32-year-old dispatch rider Emmanuel Jegede, who died in a crash on Wednesday morning along Ikotun-Idimu Road in Alimosho.
According to a Vanguard Newspaper report, the incident occurred around 10 a.m. shortly after Jegede finished a delivery and was heading to another location.
Eyewitnesses say the trouble began after a minor collision with a tricycle rider near a side street. Residents and some youths intervened and settled the dispute. But witnesses allege the same youths later demanded money from Jegede as “payment” for helping him. When he reportedly said he had no cash, the situation escalated.
One resident, who asked to remain anonymous, claimed that two men waited across the road and shoved Jegede as he rode past the Alhaja section of Ikotun-Idimu Road.
“He lost control, veered off and rammed into the median,” the witness said. “His chest hit a culvert. By the time we reached him, he was gone. The men ran away.”
Lagos Command spokesperson Abimbola Adebisi confirmed that officers from Idimu Division evacuated the body and motorcycle after being alerted by a Federal Road Safety Corps official.
She said investigators are working with two versions of events: one claiming Jegede was pushed by hoodlums, and another suggesting he swerved to avoid a pedestrian.
“We have conflicting accounts from people in the area,” Adebisi said. “Our detectives are making efforts to obtain CCTV footage to establish what actually happened.”
She added that the outcome of the probe will determine the exact cause of the fatal crash.
The incident has sparked fresh worries among dispatch riders in Lagos over harassment and extortion on major routes. Police say investigations are ongoing.
