Organisers of the Carnival Calabar say they want this year's celebration to do more than showcase colours on the streets, as they plan to use it to grow the economy, promote unity and allow more people to take part through technology, according to The Sun Newspaper.
The Chairman of the Cross River State Carnival Commission, Gabe Onah, stated this in Calabar during the flag-off of the first dry run for the 2025 carnival, an event performed by the Deputy Governor, Peter Odey.
Onah said the theme for this year's carnival, "Rethinking Our Collective Destiny," was chosen to reflect the vision of Governor Bassey Otu, which is built on love, equality and shared humanity. He said his work with the Governor shows a commitment to seeing all people as equal, noting that there is only one human race and that love remains the greatest force.
He explained that the carnival also serves as a platform for children and young people to display their talents and to encourage peace, adding that the present administration has used every edition to pass a message to the public. He recalled that past themes included "Season of Sweetness," which celebrated the return of peace, and "Our Shared Prosperity," while last year's edition, themed "Traces of Time," marked the 20th anniversary of the festival. This year's focus, he said, is on the equality of mankind and the need for the world to move forward as one people after the challenges of the COVID-19 period.
Onah further said the carnival is expected to increase earnings for the state, revealing that the last edition generated about N19 billion in socio-economic impact and that the target this year is to surpass that figure. As part of efforts to achieve this, he said the Commission will introduce online registration and online voting that will allow spectators anywhere in the world to become active participants and vote for the Band of the Year.
He added that several local and international artistes as well as some countries have already indicated interest to participate, assuring residents and visitors of an exciting celebration that will feature fireworks.
