Seven people kidnapped in Ogun State have been rescued alive. The operation was carried out in the early hours of Thursday, August 6, 2026, by a joint team of security agencies.
Five of the victims are students of Gateway ICT Polytechnic, Saapade. They were held for about a week after gunmen attacked them, along with two other persons.
Governor Dapo Abiodun announced the development during a press briefing at the Governor’s Office, Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta. He was joined by heads of security agencies and some of the rescued victims.
According to the governor, the rescue involved the Nigeria Police Force, the Armed Forces, the Department of State Services, NSCDC, the Ogun State Security Network, local vigilantes, and hunters working together.
“I am pleased to inform the good people of Ogun State that in the early hours of today, Thursday, August 6, 2026, our combined security operation successfully rescued all seven victims alive,” Abiodun said.
He added that one of the Gateway Poly students was shot during the attack. The student was rushed to hospital and has now been stabilised.
Abiodun also disclosed that the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, approved a police helicopter for aerial surveillance. He said the air support helped the team to track and secure the victims.
The governor assured residents that efforts are still ongoing to arrest other members of the kidnap gang. “Ogun State will not be a safe haven for criminals,” he said.
He further appreciated President Bola Tinubu for backing efforts to improve national security, noting better intelligence sharing and recent gains against kidnappers across Nigeria.
Ogun State Commissioner of Police, Bode Ojajuni, also spoke at the briefing. He confirmed that the victims were freed through coordinated security work.
Ojajuni said two suspected kidnappers have been arrested and are assisting investigators. He added that the search for the remaining suspects is ongoing.
The abduction had caused worry in the state after reports that five Gateway ICT Polytechnic students were taken from a hostel in Saapade.
According to residents and students, normalcy has returned to the area, even as investigations continue.
