Obafemi Awolowo University has been thrown into mourning following the death of a final-year student whose body was found in his off-campus apartment.

The deceased is Oluwole Oluwaseun, a final-year student of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering. He was discovered in a critical state at his residence in the Damico area of Ooni Layout, Ile-Ife, on Monday, September 15, 2026.

The university said the incident was reported around 1:30 p.m. that day. Upon receiving the alert, its Quick Response and Security Team moved swiftly to the scene. Officers from the Nigeria Police, A Division, Moore, Ile-Ife, also arrived shortly after.

Oluwole was immediately rushed to the University Health Centre, where a doctor later confirmed his death. The circumstances surrounding the incident are being treated as an apparent suicide.

In a statement on Wednesday, the university's Public Relations Officer, Abiodun Olarewaju, said the management was deeply saddened by the development. He added that items recovered from the scene have been handed over to the police, who are now investigating the matter.

The news has left his classmates in deep shock. The Association of Materials Science and Engineering Students, AMSES, said the loss came as a painful shock, especially as the class was already counting down to graduation. In a tribute message to students, the association condoled with his family and friends and urged members to keep them in prayers during this difficult period. The message ended with the words, "Rest in peace, Seun."

Meanwhile, the university has urged staff and students to desist from spreading unverified reports about the incident while investigation is ongoing. It also encouraged students battling emotional distress, academic challenges, relationship problems, or financial hardship to open up to trusted persons and seek help through the university's counselling and support services.

According to the university, no student should struggle alone, and help is available for anyone going through difficult moments.

The management noted that the matter is now with the appropriate authorities and updates will be provided through official channels when necessary.
