A Federal High Court sitting in Abuja has blocked former Vice President Atiku Abubakar from contesting the 2027 presidential election, after cancelling the leadership of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) under David Mark, according to Ripples Nigeria. Atiku was the presidential flagbearer of the ADC. However, the court cancelled the process that produced him as the party’s candidate for next year’s election. Delivering judgment on Thursday, Justice Peter Lifu also cancelled the emergence of former Senate President David Mark, former Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola, and other persons as national officers of the party. The judge further cancelled the nomination of all ADC candidates for the 2027 general elections, ruling that they came out of an illegal and unlawful leadership. The judgment followed a case filed by an aggrieved Deputy National Chairman of the ADC, Nafiu Bala Gombe. Justice Lifu agreed with Gombe’s argument that Mark and Aregbesola became party leaders through an...

T he 41-year-old forward revealed on Thursday that he is stepping away from national-team football, ending a run that started back in August 2003. He delivered the message himself in a clip uploaded to his Instagram page . In that clip, Ronaldo explained that he will return Portugal’s iconic No. 7 jersey following the November international window. Speaking directly to his fellow countrymen, he said the moment to release the shirt had arrived. He stressed that he never viewed the number as his personal property. For 23 years, he said, he had enjoyed the honour, and carried the duty, of pulling it on, protecting it, and taking it into arenas across the globe. Now, he believes, it is time for the next generation to take it. Ronaldo admitted the call was tough. He described it as the kind of choice that cannot be settled by logic alone, because the heart has a say too. As he reviewed over 20 years in a Portugal shirt, he said what stays with him most is not the scorelines, the strikes, th...

N igeria's Flamingos are one win away from becoming world champions after beating Brazil 3-1 in the semi-final of the FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup on Wednesday in Morocco. The win took Nigeria to the final for the first time ever. No African team had ever reached this stage before, and the Flamingos have now gone further than any Nigerian team in the history of the competition. Their best result before now was third place in 2022. The journey to this point was not easy. Nigeria started the tournament with a 2-1 defeat to Poland, a result that raised doubts about the team. But coach Akeem Busari and his young players refused to lose hope. They responded by beating defending champions North Korea 3-1 in the group stage, ending North Korea's 18-match unbeaten run. They then beat Mexico 2-1 in the Round of 16 and Venezuela 1-0 in the quarter-final, thanks to a late penalty from Azeezat Oduntan in the 89th minute. Against Brazil, Nigeria showed patience and belief. The first half...

S panish football has been thrown into mourning after striker Jesús de Miguel Alameda died on Tuesday morning following a violent clash on the pitch. The 30-year-old passed away at 8:00 a.m. local time on November 3, 2026, just hours after a Second Division game between CD Tenerife and FC Andorra at the Estadio Heliodoro Rodríguez López. The match had already been delayed over heavy rain warnings. De Miguel was badly hurt in the 96th minute with the game tied at 2-2. Tenerife broke on a counter-attack and he raced to chase a long ball around the centre circle. Andorra goalkeeper Jesús Owono rushed out of his box at full speed and struck him hard in the upper body with his knee. The forward fell to the grass unconscious. The referee immediately showed Owono a straight red card and stopped play as players from both sides called for medical help. Some of his teammates were in tears on the field. Medics spent over five minutes treating him on the pitch before taking him away in an ambulanc...

F ormer Senator representing Kogi West, Dino Melaye, has thrown a challenge to President Bola Tinubu, asking him to face him in a Qur'anic recitation contest. Melaye threw the challenge on Monday via a post on his X account, shortly after the President completed the lesser Hajj in Saudi Arabia. In his post, he wrote, “Now that Alhaji Bola Tinubu is in Umrah. Immediately he comes back, I challenge him to a Quranic citation competition with me. No one can mock God. SDM.” His statement came hours after President Tinubu spoke about his experience in the holy land, where he was granted rare access into the Holy Kaaba in Makkah. After performing Umrah, the President said he used the moment to pray for Nigeria, asking Allah for peace among different faiths and tribes, and for prosperity for the nation. Tinubu said he also prayed for wisdom and strength to lead the country, adding that he believes God has answered his prayer. "I feel fulfilled and grateful to Almighty Allah for giving...

F or the first time, an Olympic event is on African soil in Dakar, Senegal. Athletes from around the world are here to chase their dreams. How The Olympics Started The first Games were held in 776 BC in Olympia, Greece, to honour Zeus, king of the Greek gods. It was so important that warring towns stopped fighting to compete. It later stopped, but French teacher Baron Pierre de Coubertin brought it back in 1894 to promote peace. The first modern Games were held in Athens in 1896 with just 14 countries. All athletes were men. Today it is the world's biggest sports event. Nigeria's Greatest Moments Nigeria first competed in 1952. Since then, we have made history. First Medal - Nojim Maiyegun (Tokyo 1964) Boxer Nojim Maiyegun won bronze. It was Nigeria's first-ever Olympic medal. First Gold - Chioma Ajunwa (Atlanta 1996) On July 29, 1996, Chioma Ajunwa jumped 7.12m in the long jump to win gold. H ave you ever scrolled through social media around late October and wondered why millions of people abroad dress up as ghosts or monsters? I saw a similar video and know you might have seen same. That celebration is called Halloween, and it happens every year on October 31. Despite being one of the trending events or topics, the truth is that Nigeria does not celebrate Halloween. For the over 200 million people living here, October 31 passes just like any other regular day. To understand this famous global event, let us look at where it came from, what it means, and why it remains entirely foreign to our culture. When and Where Did It All Begin? Halloween is not a modern American invention. Its roots go back more than 2,000 years to an ancient group of people called the Celts, who lived in the lands we now call Ireland, the United Kingdom, and northern France. They celebrated a festival called Samhain (pronounced as "Sow-in"). This festival marked their new year, which began...
