For the first time, an Olympic event is on African soil in Dakar, Senegal. Athletes from around the world are here to chase their dreams.
How The Olympics Started
The first Games were held in 776 BC in Olympia, Greece, to honour Zeus, king of the Greek gods. It was so important that warring towns stopped fighting to compete.
It later stopped, but French teacher Baron Pierre de Coubertin brought it back in 1894 to promote peace. The first modern Games were held in Athens in 1896 with just 14 countries. All athletes were men. Today it is the world's biggest sports event.
